Accompaniment Training for New Volunteers

  • North Seattle location will be shared before the training. (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join JCIJ's In-Person Accompaniment Training for new volunteers on Sunday, October 26th from 2:00-5:30PM!

Tickets are $18* to attend, which helps defray the costs of event expenses and materials. Registration is required. We will send you the in-person location in North Seattle closer to the date of the training.

Be a part of deportation defense efforts and show solidarity with immigrant community members. Get trained to accompany neighbors to immigration court hearings, ICE check-ins, biometrics, and ankle monitor appointments. Training will be participatory and practical and include what to do if the community member is detained.

If you have questions about this training, feel free to contact us at team@jewishcoalition.org

Register

Please fill out the registration survey as you are registering to see if you are a good fit for this training. There are so many ways to support immigrant communities in this moment, and if accompaniment isn't the right fit at this time, we are happy to share other ways to get involved!

To Know Before You Register:

  • Space is limited in this training.

  • Accompaniments take place during weekdays Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm.

  • The Jewish Coalition is growing a base of committed accompaniment volunteers to meet this moment

  • If you are registering for this training, we ask that you are serious about becoming a regular accompaniment volunteer (potentially weekly, biweekly, or monthly)

  • We are receiving an unprecedented number of accompaniment requests and are currently unable to meet the number of requests.

  • We anticipate that the number of requests will continue to grow as ICE’s presence escalates in Seattle and the National Guard, possibly, is deployed to our state.

  • We welcome people who speak languages in addition to English, but this is not required.

What Is Required of Accompaniment Volunteers? Please read carefully to determine if you can meet these requirements BEFORE registering for this training. Thank you.

Note: JCIJ wants to be transparent about what it looks like to be an accompaniment volunteer so that people who decide to go through with the training are clear on what this role looks like and able to commit to being a volunteer:

  • Availability during weekdays Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm (and potentially earlier or later if driving a community member).

  • Ability to drive or take public transportation to US Immigration Court in downtown Seattle or to the Department of Homeland Security or BI Incorporated in Tukwila.

  • In some cases, the ability to pick up community members and drive them to immigration appointments or hearings.

  • Mobility to walk from parking lot or public transportation to court room or office and navigate building and elevators. Ability to stand for long periods of time, as seating is not always available.

  • Ability to stay calm in stressful situations.

  • Commitment to follow the Jewish Coalition’s Accompaniment Principles to cause no harm and take no action that could negatively affect the immigrant community member or jeopardize their immigration case. Accompaniment is different from direct action.

    • Many organizations are doing powerful work around nonviolent direct action, and we’d be happy to point you to those organizations if that is your interest.

*In Jewish tradition, the number 18 is a symbol for life, something we are determined to uphold in this moment and honor always.
